Martial Arts Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve pulled together some of the most common questions we get asked about Tugra Shan Martial arts.  However, if you would like to find out more or would like to discuss our classes in more detail, please feel free to call or message Kancho John Alford the owner and founder of the club.

Can I try a free martial arts class to see If I like It?

Yes, we want you to love your martial arts training with Tugra Shan so you are welcome to come and try your first class for free.

I’m new to martial arts what should I wear to class?

For your first lesson, wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.  A t-shirt and track pants are ideal.   Classes are undertaken barefoot so please remove your footwear after you have entered the dojo (training room).  Please arrive 10 minutes early so we have a chance to meet you and give you an information pack.

Do I need any previous martial arts experience?

No, our classes will teach you all the basics if you are a beginner and help you pick up where you left off if you have practised martial arts before.

Am I too young or too old to do martial arts?

Everyone is welcome at our club and it’s never too late in life to start studying martial arts.  People of all ages can benefit physically, mentally & psychologically from our classes.  Juniors are best suited when they turn 5 years old, but they can start as young as 4.  There are no upper age limits at our club with our oldest member being 71 years old.

How much do martial arts classes cost?

Our martial arts classes are competitively priced and cost less than $20 per week for unlimited training in any of our classes.  There is an annual membership fee and class fees are paid monthly by cash.

We regularly run a special introductory offer which includes the 1st year’s annual membership fee, first-4 weeks class training and an awesome black karate uniform, ask in class for more details.

Do you sell the uniforms and other equipment?

Yes, we sell all the equipment you will need including our TSMA karate and BJJ uniforms, TSMA rash guards, boxing gloves and shin instep protectors, mouth guards, mitts, soft shin guards, eskrima Sticks and wooden swords with sheaths.

How often should I attend classes?

Students tend to learn and progress faster by attending at least 2 classes per week.  However, you can train at the level which best suits you.  Your monthly fees cover unlimited classes so you can attend as many training sessions as you need.  For the best progression, we also recommend that students try to practice their syllabus at home.
